These words pretty much sum up the attitude of this band of do-it-yourselfers from West Virginia. Since 2006 The Fox Hunt have been building up steam and taking to the road like true warriors. Now after only four years the boys have cut through the heart of the country state-by-state, performing at endless bars & venues, appearing at numerous festivals, making countless friends, and in 2010, releasing what is now their third full length album, Long Way to Go, consisting of all original songs. Revved up and ready, they are fueled by passion and driven by the music. It won’t be long before they work their way into the hearts, minds, and voices of many.

Calling on tradition where appropriate, the Fox Hunt play fiddle-centered stringband and original country music through a single condenser microphone. Despite their delicateness in handling the traditional side of their repertoire, their roots go in all directions. They have a rough and rowdy stage show, constantly trading off roles by switching up instruments, exchanging vocals, or harmonizing in the background, all while weaving in and out of the microphone. The instrumentation itself is characteristic of old time string music, bluegrass, and early country, consisting of acoustic guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, and upright bass. The elements all together form a straightforward mix of bright melodies, identifiable lyrics, and rough, smoky arrangements, falling in well with both the barroom crowds and theatre audiences alike. Relentlessly touring 150 days a year or more, the Fox Hunt will surely be passing through a town near you soon!

The captain of this train is Clifton Williams. Clifton is a guitar-wielding, song-writing machine with a love for skillful rock-n-roll that ranges from Paul Simon to Metallica to Bob Marley. These influences shine through the songs of the Blue James Band, which are funky, progressive, melodic, and fun. On keys sits the lovely Valerie Taylor, the reigning queen of funk. Rounding out the rhythm section are the masterful Doug Birmingham on drums and Jason Shaw on bass, two of the most dynamic players around town.

WILL, released by Chappy Payne Records, is the band’s latest album. With veteran mixer Jack Gauthier (Dispatch, State Radio) on the roster and Clifton producing, WILL has a decidedly rootsy and organic vibe. The pop-infused “Don’t Waste the Days” and the reggae-tinged “Believe” have memorable hooks and loads of lyrical style, while “Sunday Afternoon” and “If It Were Up To Me” showcase the impressive musicianship the band is known for. Simply put, WILL will rock your socks off.

On the heels of WILL’s success, the music of the Blue James Band has spread to many new faces and places. The band has had the pleasure of opening for artists such as: Victor Wooten, Rusted Root, Tim Reynolds, The Mother Hips, Hot Buttered Rum, and Elvin Bishop.

With tours booked on both coasts and more high-profile opening gigs on the horizon, 2010 is shaping up to be another stellar year for the Blue James Band.

Initially attracted to the guitar after being introduced to classic rock giants such as Led Zeppelin and The Who, Dirk’s thirst for the unique and bizarre soon had him jamming along to the more radical and daring Mahavishnu Orchestra and the humorous, bass-laden noise of Primus.

Playing virtually non-stop with countless musical projects afforded him ample opportunity to hone his chops. It wouldn’t be long before the refining of his own artistic message coupled with a fresh, new outlook and a deeper musical/life philosophy opened up to him the world of jazz. Miles, Coltrane, Monk and Brubeck along with the more contemporary sounds of Bela Fleck, John Scofield, Ahmad Jamal and Jaco Pastorius began heavily influencing his musical direction. Liberated by the idea of free improvisation, he was finally able to realize and focus his musical vision.

The new CD exhibits a musical confidence and a genuine excitement for this unique brand of groove-oriented jazz. Surrounding himself with a group of extremely talented and like-minded musicians, Dirk has been playing shows up and down the east coast while receiving an ever increasing amount of media attention. Locally, the music has been put in a regular rotation on Philadelphia’s 90.1 WRTI and 97.5-2 WJJZ-HD2. Nationally, he gets spins on XM Radio’s Beyond Jazz channel as well as on The Groove Boutique – a syndicated jazz/funk program that’s broadcast on FM in 13 cities nationwide. Dirk and the band have also performed live on Fox 45′s morning show in Baltimore and have had the great pleasure of guesting on Gene Shay’s Sunday night radio show on WXPN and Jeff Duperon’s Straight Ahead jazz program on WRTI – both in Philadelphia.

Since the inception of the Dirk Quinn Band at the beginning of 2007, the QuinnTet has already landed some prestigious bookings and have been honored to share the stage with such legends as Jimmy Bruno, Jim Weider (The Band), Rodney Holmes (Santana), Chico Huff (Pat Martino, John Swana), Jef Lee Johnson (George Clinton, David Sanborn), and Sam Kininger (Soulive).

The band’s high energy and musical interplay routinely attract listeners that are admittedly more accustomed to lyric-based music. ith great melodic sensibilities, rhythmic experimentation and an accessible modern edge, the Dirk Quinn Band is jazz/funk improvisation at its most exciting!

A self-taught percussionist, George Jones has been a mainstay on the Pittsburgh music scene for more than 30 years and recognized as the finest conga player in the area. George’s mother was a bass player with the famous “International Sweethearts of Rhythm”, traveling across the country until settling in Pittsburgh in the fifties She was the inspiration and motivation for George’s interest and love of jazz, exposing him to “Jazz at the Philharmonic” at an early age. During a stint in the military in the sixties, George played on pots and pans – anything he could get his hands on – and developed his interest in African drums and rhythm. George returned to Pittsburgh, where he was further encouraged by Eric Kloss and Roger Humphries. George has performed countless concerts and club dates with Pittsburgh jazz greats and internationally known artists Pharoah Sanders, Richard ‘Groove’ Holmes, Ray Mantilla, and Larry Coryell. In 1984, George co-founded the seminal Latin Jazz group “Salsamba” with guitarist Eric Susoeff, recording six CDs with the band.

Based on the Flemish classic (Oud Bruin) this is a very complex beer that has many flavor facets. Brewed with Redwood tips and the rare New Zealand Nelson Sauvin Hop, this lively red ale was aged for 8 months before kegging. After the main fermentation roughly 35% of this beer was soured in stainless steel, of the remaining beer about 60% was aged in red & white wine barrels, and 40% split between Brandy and bourbon barrels for aging. All of these beers were then blended together with a small amount of our Grand Cru (the Brother David’s Belgians ales aged in Wine Barrels). The resulting beer is very complex medium bodied beer with vinous character from the wine barrels, spicey notes from both the redwood and the Nelson Sauvin hops and a light sourness from the bacteria fermentation in the stainless, all underlined by a smooth round Belgian character from the Brother David’s Grand Cru.

Brewniversity hosts an overview of the role of women in the local and national craft beer industry, with a discussion about how craft beer is a gender neutral movement, unlike stereotypical “beer culture.” The main portion of the event will be spent on palate education using the “beer wheel.” Everyone will take a sample of their beer, then check the flavors they think they taste on the beer wheel. Speakers leading the event will discuss what they taste and do some Q&A with each beer.

The home brewer is a very unique person, they are producer and consumer all wrapped up in one. They are their own worst critics and often throw beer down the drain. They have a product that often, very often, surpasses the beer that is available commercially, because they don’t mind the cost of the ingredients, nor do they have to worry about the forces that govern what they call a beer, nor do they wonder if it is going to have a mass appeal.

Home brewing is part cooking, part mad science and mostly part love. Anyone that home brews can follow recipes just as we do when we first start learning how to cook. Then they become brave, more creative with their recipes and if you have a friend that home brews, you have probably been the fortunate recipient of their wares!

Some home brewers will always be hobbyists; Some will turn their love of the craft into a profession. Many breweries have been built this way. There is so much more to be said, and a lot is said here in the video:

Bart Walker – Guitars/Vocals – Bart was recently awarded the prestigious Gibson Guitar Best Blues Guitarist in the 2012 International Blues Challenge. In addition to his current role as lead guitarist for B.B. King’s All-Stars at B.B. King’s Blues Club, he has also chalked up countless hours in the studio with Steve Gorman (Black Crows), A.J. Croce (son of Jim Croce), Bo Bice, Audly Freed. (Cry Of Love & Black Crows), and Robert Kearns (Lynyrd Skynyrd).

Reese Wynans - Keyboards -  Reese joined Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble in 1985, playing keyboards on Soul to Soul and In Step. Wynans performed with the group until Vaughan’s death in 1990. Prior to, he was a member of the Second Coming, which, from November 1968 to Feb 1969 also included two future and founding members of The Allman Brothers Band: guitarist Dickey Betts and bassist Berry Oakley.

Paul Ossola – Bass – Paul was a recent Grammy Winner in 2011 with Levon Helm- Live at the Ryman.  He has also appeared on the David Letterman Show, the Conan O’Brian Show,  The Tonight Show
and alongside G.E. Smith in the Saturday Night Live Band.

Jim Thistle - Drums – Thistle’s played drums in support of tours or recording sessions for acts such as Josh Gracin, the Dixie Chicks, and Kenny Chesney, and most recently newcomer David Nail, and a veteran, Buzz Cason, whose original songs have been recorded by an incredible span of artists stretching from The Beatles to U2.

The Bart Walker Band placed 2nd in the overall competition out of 228 competing bands in the 2012 Gibson International Blues Challenge.
